Join Operatunity Theatre for “Opera on the ‘Virtual’ River” Saturday, August 1: an engaging summertime concert featuring opera and musical theatre favorites from the “Sound of Music “and “Oklahoma” to “The Barber of Seville” and “La Traviata”. This second-annual event features Stillwater native and multi-award-winning international opera singer Jack Swanson, along with Katherine Henly, John Moore, and Zoie Reams. The instrumental chamber musicians will be conducted by Andrew Sun, who works with Minnesota Opera.
After the rousing success of 2019’s initial “Opera on the River” on the banks of the St. Croix in Stillwater’s Lowell Park, Operatunity Theatre is thrilled to be able to offer a free, socially-distanced concert that can convey the power and emotion of opera and musical theatre to audiences across the Twin Cities and beyond. “Opera on the ‘Virtual’ River” will be live-streamed online from an idyllic outdoor setting near downtown Stillwater. Please visit www.operatunitytheatre.org/ootr2020 for the latest on which channels the concert will be streamed.
While this year’s event cannot invite in-person gathering in the heart of downtown Stillwater, Operatunity Theatre is still collaborating with local organizations and businesses to celebrate the vibrancy of the arts, restaurants, and the overall community in the St. Croix Valley area.
“We are so excited that the dream team here at Operatunity Theatre has found a creative way to follow our mission of offering live performance ‘operatunities’ to audiences and artists during this stressful time while work in the performing arts is scarce,” says Obed Floan, the Executive Director of Operatunity Theatre. “The power that music and the performing arts, especially live performances, have to heal the soul and give comfort to everyone, no matter what community you come from is transformative, and we hope that this concert event brings people together and provides a little of that comfort and joy.”
In addition, Ms. Henly and Mr. Swanson will be featured in a preview concert prior to “Opera on the ‘Virtual’ River” on Thursday, July 23, 2020 at 7 pm. Their repertoire will consist of works by Bernstein, Rossini, Puccini, and Rodgers and Hammerstein, and will be live-streamed from the outdoor porch of the Rivertown Inn in Stillwater.
